They do not directly read the slide position so only as accurate as the feed screws. Some feed screws were originally very accurate but they deteriorate with age. Provided that you allow for backlash, they may well be accurate enough for you, at least you don't have to count the turns. Before linear scale DROs, all work was done with the feed screw micrometer dials.
To answer the question asked, the device is a counter so any reasonably competent electronics bod should be able to sort it out, they are however a rare breed now.
