Do I need another lathe? Not really.

 

One the same size as the one I've got? Not at all.

Anyway after (quite) a few beers tonight it seemed like a good idea and a few texts later I'm going on a roadtrip this weekend.

A rather sorry looking Boxford AUD will be my hobby for a while.

Anyway I thought a few roadtrip photos might be fun so see u saturday.

I commented in my post on my Shaper refurb that I obtained a Boxford lathe when I was around 12 years old – It was also the AUD, complete on its original cabinet, with all the accessories, 3 and 4 jaw chucks, a vertical slide, Coolant pump, faceplate, etc. Fortunately it was in very good condition and a repaint made it look like new. Sold it in my early twenties Hindsight hurts sometimes – I do wish I still had that lathe!

It came from the Toolroom of a company my Dad did some work for – FMC-Link Belt Pty LTD – an American company, that pulled out of South Africa during the SA world Embargo era, and sold stuff for next to nothing. In my late Dad's legacy of papers and stuff I found the receipt of payment – R450.00 !! In the day the SA Rand to Bpound was 1:2 – Yes, 2 pounds for one SA Rand…17:1 today…

I am sure you will enjoy that Lathe!

Tomorrow I will be going on a long tour to get the Boxford.

Today after work I went for a three hour round trip to pick up a "Flott" drill press. The ad said "a metre high, don't work". Didn't say weighs a ton.

Two strong men managed to get it into the car,

I had to take it apart inside the car to get it out and down to the workshop.

At £40 the price was right .

Now that looks like a good solid drill press, well worth having if it's in good nick. Which it appears to be, judging from the lack of Swiss cheesing of the table.

Is that an auto downfeed knob on the top left of the spindle housing?

It does seem to be in good nick, just very dirty.

Everything came apart easily.

I was hoping for autofeed when I saw the big knob but I think it is for belt tension.

First ferry, and the weather is Nice for once.

Waiting for the last ferry. Then one moore hour of driving and I think I deserve a beer.

Lathe seems in ok shape. The guy had taken it apart but lost interest. Some rust on the stand, but the ways are covered in grease. It is complete exept maybe missing the suds pump.

First dry fit.

I'm no fan of painting but it was such a mess I ended up with a repaint.

After inventory it is missing both gibs,a few grub screws and the top slide dial.

The back gear is busted so buy cutters and make new gears or buy new gears.

The lathe has imperial leadscrew/gear box but with complete metric gear set..

Cross and top slide is metric.

The tailstock is imperial with metric markings on the barrel

The lathe is looking nice Yngvar, you have done a good job. I am sure you'll get a nice lathe when you have sorted the remaining issues.

I've made new gibs and micrometer dial.

Unfortunately the Divisionmaster let out the smoke when I was going to engrave the dial, and I do not have the 25 hole plate to do 125 division manually.

Ended up with 25 divisions for now.
