Vertical Mill

As space is limited at the moment I am looking at getting a vertical mill attachment for the Myford ML7. Rather than buy one I thought I'd try and make one along with a vice. Does anyone know of any plans available?

Harold Hall made one in a 3-part series in MEW nos 127,128,and 129, with user instructions in MEW 130 and 131.

There was an earlier one, similar to the small Rodney milling attachment. I'm fairly sure this was in MEW.

Curtis there is a plan on this website for the conversion of a cross vice to a vertical slide. If you do an internet search for "vertical slide plans" you'll come up with a load of suggestions for the job.

For info. what you illustrate is typically known as a 'vertical slide'

There is more than one way to use these, and you may find it useful to consider the options before deciding exactly what you want to build.

May I suggest that you have a look at the MAP book "Milling in the Lathe"

As Michael says, what you are after is a "Vertical Slide" However, much use of the term "Milling Attachment" on ebay has resulted in this term being widely used, to all round confusion.

There is another version of the conversion of a cross vice to vertical slide in MEW no 27, Jan/Feb 1995, and a "proper" design by Martin Evans reviewed in MEW no 47 Dec 1997. Drawings for this one are available from the Plans Service of MyHobbyStore, and it was described in ME no 3754 and 3756 in Jun/Jul 1985. This does use castings though.

I would recommend a good look round Harold Hall's website, previously referenced, particularly his articles on the "Lathe Only Workshop" to give you an idea of what can be done.

I have a copy of plans for making a vertical slide from bright mild steel flat bar all bolted together to form the T slots etc. It was by LC Mason and was published in Science and Mechanics magazine. You can download a copy from here **LINK**

In the end I bought a used Myford vertical slide off eBay. If you wait for teh right one you can get them at a reasonable price. Unless you are doing fancy stuff like helical gear cutting or something you are probaby best to get/make the solid slide, not the double swivel variety. I find the latter tends to move under heavy cutting with large cutters.
