      Hi All,

I have just got this small case of Threading Dies which I cannot recognise from the markings. No taps but I have many taps to look through if I can ID the thread type. Pretty sure they are not BA. Sized 8 – 13

Also quite an unusual die holder just for this type?

Weird looking hold down mechanism for the dies but makes perfect sense, An internet search doesn't throw up anything significant to tell us where it came from other than "Bradbury". They look pretty old school, so it wouldn't surprise me that there isn't much information to go on.

If you're interested in discovering the threadform, why not try threading an appropriately sized bar with it and see what it looks like against a contrasting background.

PS. the number + G, symbols, and the small sizes indicate for me that it may have been designed for threading standard gauge sized wire??

Will have a go at a thread pic tomorow, might have to dig out the macro lens though….

Jaso, I did not know that there were special threads for bicycles?

Jason is right, they are for threading spokes. More likely to be motorcycle than pedal cycle though. The "G" is for the gauge of the spoke.

Bradbury was one of the big names in this kind of equipment, I still have my grandfathers spoke threading machine and wheel balancing jig that he bought from Bradbury's in the 1920/30's when he had a motorcycle repair shop

They are usually rolled onto the spoke but as your dies are not split they may be for cleaning up the threads, Spokes are sized by Gauge so possibly what the G stands for, though at 8g you could be looking at motorcycles too.

They are bicycle wheel spoke thread dies made by Bradbury and were supplied in a number of gauge sizes. They also made Bicycle repair , Wheel building and spoke threading machines plus a variety of vintage bicycle repair tools. I have a similar boxed die set in my collection of early bicycle tooling also a small spoke treading machine which these dies fit.

So I will be wasting my time looking for a set of taps then! smile

Thanks very much everyone, such a mine of info on here.

There must have been taps around to make the nipples for the spokes. Might be difficult to find though.

I was curious about taps as they are usually needed to go with dies. It seems that one size of the UNC numbered series is suitable for some size of spokes. Maybe others are too.

Problem is if you do get hold of the taps then you will be wanting a nipple threader to go with itwink 2.

I suspect the taps are the bent variety that you find in nut tapping machines

angel 2 If they are for cleaning up rolled threads the taps should match. It seems some one use a certain number to make what they seem to call nipples to go on the end of the spokes. Size ?? but 56tpi.

I have a couple of similar-looking dies, but they're BA.
