      Hi all,

I own a Champion 20v mill, the motor has gone in a cloud of smoke. Does anyone know what the dc voltage is on the Champion, I think it maybe 180v.

I was thinking of using a treadmill motor, , would any motor over 1hp do?

Would the voltage have to match the champion motor? Sorry for all the questions iam poor electrically. If it was a case of installing a dc motor with the champion wiring that would be fine. Any assistance would be gratefully accepted. Thanks. Ronnie.

Hi Ron, I have got the Champion 16v mill and a very similar thing happened with my motor, try a phone call to Mark or Tony at Chester and I am sure that they will give you all the help you need. I my case I fitted a computer fan in the casing to assist the cooling of the motor and I have no trouble since. Keep us informed, regards Pat

It is the motor and not the controller? The motors are generally a bit more robust. A replacement motor would need to match the original in voltage and power, presumably it's a DC permanent magnet or wound field type. To be frank it might be best to bite the bullet and get a spare motor from Chester if they stock them.

Even better might be to go for a 3-phase induction motor and a VFD, but might be hard to find a motor that will fit.

If it's the same as a standard mini-lathe motor they are rated 230V DC.

Think you will find most Treadmill motors are PM DC 180 volt working and no doubt would need more amps than your controller could pass, max spindle speed would be around 4000rpm.
