I agree that VE day should remain a day of reflection and remembrance marking the end of world war two.
At the time it was a huge celebration after six years of horrific war.
I’m currently at a community garden beacon lighting ceremony. A few older folk are turning up but younger people have no interest in what VE day stands for.
The war is now too distant, too alien to the levels of freedom and excess that everyone enjoys today.
I was chatting to an American pal the other day about flags. If they fly the stars and stripes overnight it must be spot lit. Over here the union flag is left out 24/7 on public buildings looking like a dishcloth. When I joined the police in 1988 we flew the flag on specified days and saluted it’s raising and lowering. Now that doesn’t happen, it’s just left up full time.
We have very little national pride and very little sense of community.
Give it ten years and remembrance will fall by the wayside….unless we have a nice little war to get things back on track.
