I have just realised I was looking at the solution to my problem all along – I already have one taper tool that fits in my spindle. I can make that into the adapter sleeve – it looks like it was a tool to take a Jacobs Chuck so I can machine away all the business end and all I will need to do is turn the internal taper on the old tool….. simples…. I hope.

Thats the ticket, always get the job done the simplist way, just be sure the donor will not be missed at a later date.

6.2.21 Model Engineer.168912 Forum. Here I am again. Yes its the Adcock Mill nitemare Cannot say I have got anywhere regarding this Adcock Mk1 Horiz/Vert mill of mine. I was a fool to buy a pile of parts stored in a shed Months later finding out the top arm was missing and the tapers did not match anything I had prev encountered Started to try to overcome the issues but found for instance that top arms are ground not turned and the tapers are NS. Since then serious illness, no med help, and property faults which were covered up by teachers sellers has pout me into a hole. The machine stands outside covered by a tarp. I don't even have any machine wkg apart from hand drills and so on. Today I found the article about a sleeve to overcome some of the issues. I found them very interesting. Am thinking of attempting the get rid of this machine as I gave failed. Am hoping to get money back as its got a vertical head which must be worth money. What a shame all this failure is. Difficult to cope with sometimes particularly when wearther is bad. Never did like failure.

Don't beat yourself up John. Plenty of us will have bought something duff in our lifetimes. Like you say, sell it & move on. Regards.

              Steve.

Good advice John, if it's causing you grief – just sell it and don't worry about it.

It will probably be a weight off your mind.

                Regards,

                IanT

Buy a BT40 to BT30 adapter from ARC. Take time on a Lathe to machine it down to the right taper and job done – I did mine that way.

Adcock back in use – Give it a go, you'll be surprised.

                        FWIW

When I needed to make male and female tapers that matched, having set over the Top Slide, I turned and bored the tapers without disturbing the setting.

Having had an open ended 2 – 3 MT sleeve stuck in the Mill (With a drawbar hole too small in diameter to be able to use a brass drift ) I made up a crude puller with a split end that could be pushed through the sleeve, and then expanded by pulling a taper into it. The rim of the split "top hat" piece then sat on the end of the sleeve and tightening a 1/4 BSF (Could be M6 ) nut pulled the sleeve free. Has worked every time when needed.

                        Howard
