          George,

Back issues of Engineering in Miniature are available here **LINK**

It is probably not the done thing to ask for copies of copyright material on a rival publisher's website surprise

          Cheers,

          Rod

The series went from June to November, looking at the suitablility of various valve gears for the loco.

I've got Walchaert's on mine, but it also has a proper boiler, so is it still a Sweet Pea? The paint isn't as bad as the photo would suggest It's not good tho'. Having endless problems with photos, hence multiple edits

I have looked through this series and Marshall doesn't really feature. The June issue compared Hackworth in different locomotives. The only Hackworth variation Simon went close to recommending was Woolf, featured in the July issue. August was JMG, September was Helmholtz, October was Walschaert's (by far the best), and November featured Strong/Southern.

                  Possibly not relevant, but:

Some years ago, at a Worthing Open Day, there was a extended Sweet Pea, ( "WASP" – Was A Sweet Pea, 2-6-2 from memory) with Southern valvegear. The owner said that he had opted for that because any wear could be rectified just by making new bushes, rather than dies and die blocks.

The 2 – 6 – 0 Sweet Pea with Southern VG was built by the late Martyn McBrien, who I first met when we both worked for Singer Link Miles in Lancing, just along the road from Worthing club. He had a boiler made for it by Helen Verrall but with the mod. of a large drum shaped steam dome within the cab, to collect dry steam a bit more efficiently. The loco was donated to the club and after a bit of fettling, goes a treat. Not bad for a Tornado simulator electronics guy!
