Sifting through my pile of junk / useful odds and ends, I found the item shown in the photos. About 18 inches long, non-symmetrical holes pierced in it and round bosses with a slot in at each end on both sides. I think it's steel, could be cast-iron. One of the ends has a bit broken off it.

Any ideas what it's for? Is it part of some larger piece of machinery?

            Car spoke adjuster maybe?

            Wire fence tensioner?

            Scraper holder?

It has a forged-blacksmith look to it, so I would guess steel or something similar to steel.

              .

Left field answer, could it be the bar that the smokebox dart engages with?

I think it's a bit big for a spoke adjuster. The fact that the holes in the middle are different shapes makes me suspect they have a purpose other than mere decoration.

I'm sure somebody will know, I have confidence in our forum members!

My instincts tell me it may be a linear handled turbo thromulator, but it may just be a common wrench to operate plug valves or stopcocks with various size straight tabs on top to open and close them. Just my guess.

looks like a multi-tool for stop cocks etc

The left hand one jams onto more rounded ones

Not too big… but big enough to be hefty

I used to cart a wheel key about in my boiler suit on an old products carrier, a bit heavy at fifteen inches but essential when you're surrounded by 2-300 pipeline valves of various sizes and resistance

Maybe it was a british waterways issue bit of kit for the canals, that sort of thing where only the top of the valve stem, the square bit, was available to stop the public fiddling with stuffs

                        I agree.

You've convinced me – stopcock key it is then. But if I need a thromulator it will do instead.

                          I knew you'd come through.

                          Thanks chaps!

Edit – there's so many films involving submarines where one of those wheel keys would have saved the day when the depth charges went off…
