        The 2ba bolts on the column, cylinder, top support, etc look oversize and unrealistic to me.

        I am thinking in terms of a smaller size stud and nut as used on the M E beam engine.

        Would appreciate other members thoughts / suggestions.

          Stuarts 2BA always seem to have quite tall heads and they are regular size hex. Easiest option would be to stick with 2BA threads for the studs but buy or make "one size smaller" hex nuts so in effect you have 2BA threads with 3BA Hex nuts. Most of teh ME suppliers sell the smaller hex fixings.
