I had a flat miles from anywhere – near an outlet for a well known publisher of model engineering books at the time. I found that the tyre change people hadn't put the security tool back in the car. By the time I found out the office had closed so I decided to take a walk to see if there was a garage or anything about. Just round the corner I saw an AA van so asked if he could help even though I wasn't in the AA. He took one look at the car – a Passat went into his van van and came out with a an extractor socket that fitted perfectly. I think they are used to get rounded nuts off. He changed the wheel for me and I contributed to his holiday fund.

I went to the VW dealer to get a new bolt and having bought one showed him what was needed to get them off easily. Also to explain why I wasn't going to fit a new security bolt. They were a bit dismayed that it was so easy and the guy who served me said he wasn't going to bother fitting them again either.

With a car like my Mondeo, it's surely not worth nicking them. i guess that only if you have posh custom alloys are they worth enough to pinch. And if you drive a blue Subaru with gold alloys, who would have the bad taste to steal them anyway?

          Jason maybe ?

My Forester has what is probably Japan's latest idea – some parts of the alloys are black and shiny. My son thought they were plastic wheel trims.

Other Subaru owners who only have the basic silver onessmile p

It more of a problem having the whole car stolen as they are popular get away cars, I've been pulled over a few times as the police just like to make sure the owners are driving them.

Put my foot in it there

My stepson used to have one.

I assume the black plastic wheels are what people who get fed up of having them stolen fit? _ I nearly got drummed out of the Open Manta Owners Club for turning up with black wheel trims (the concept was 'none more black&#39.
