        Hi Andy,

As regards holding the item I would be inclined to make a top hat bush to hold in the chuck. This could be bored out a close fit on the outside diameter of the item and then split to grip the item. A slot down the side would take care of the projection and keep it out of the way while you work on it.

You would need to mark the top hat bush, (ref No 1 jaw say), to maintain concentricity.

It is some while since I was an angler, but the material could be brass or bronze from what I can see.

        Regards

        Gray,

Looking at some pictures of pre war Hardy reels on the web, my best guess would be Nickel Silver – so treat as brass.  I would do as Gray suggests but I would consider annealing before trying to undo the swaging.

I cant add much other than I would have thought it would be brass then nickel plated, but if you mount it as suggested you could take a fine cut from the inside of the bezel to check.

Andy, I have never seen any of those alloy reels with anything but nickel silver for the line guide where it is in effect a mount for the agate.

I have seen some very early brass faced Perfect’s with a brass line guide and some early alloy reels with a solid brass line guide as well as some/most with a nickel silver guide.

But on the later alloy reels they came with either a solid nickel silver line guide or with agate mounted in NS and much later with a some sort of brown ceramic? instead of agate.

The reel foot is either brass or alloy,  the cage and spool are machined die cast aluminium. Hardy’s had their own foundry to make the castings.
