I know this defeats the purpose of the whole live steam experience but I was wondering if anyone uses propane instead of coal? If so, what kind of results are you seeing?

Are there any companies selling burner kits for locos?

          Burn the heretic!

LBSC designed an oil-fired loco called Petrolea.

They use propane a lot in the US. I was told they are not allowed to burn coal in California. Try some US web sites. Personally, I think it utterly defeats the purpose.

Remember your old cowboy films? Most times the outlaws were clambering across a tender full of wood not coal so if you are running a Virginia you shouldn't be using coal anyway. Definitely everyone was using propane when I visited Los Angeles Live Steamers.

hi try looking up the steam boat association,,a lot of the boilers used are gas or oil fired, and they have all of the info on how they work and construction, myself use a simpson strickland quadruple expansion engine and a fire tube boiler , but that is on a 29ft launch,

Train Mountain, (USA) they all use LPG even hauling a LPG fright wagon as the track length and terrain is so vast. Designs for burners are about as well to make your own.

There was an article many years ago in ME about making a burner for a 5"g Metro, it seemd to work quite successfully. No doubr someone will find the exact issue number

Thank you all for your quick replies! I understand that steaming with LPG defeats the whole aesthetics of the hobby.

However, all of my vehicles run on LPG, even my lawn mower and strimmer. So I figure why not convert one of my little locos to run on the "going Green Gas" too keeping up with the pattern. I have five locos, one of which is the 5" G Metro, If i can find the article that duncan was talking about, I would like to try it on LPG.

Please let me know If anyone has any further information on where I may be able to find this article?

I would be very interested to learn about your LPG strimmer.
