power hacksaws

Hi I am looking for information on Wicksteed power hacksaws. I just acquired a 6 inch medium duty econocut.

Does anyone known which hydraulic oil is used in this model? I saw on another forum that iso 150 was the right grade but I would like several opinions if possible.

Also would like information on the kind of seals used if any are in these hydraulic feed and return saws.

A picture shows "use light hydraulic oil" which doesn't help a great deal does it?

[Edit] Been reading a bit from here https://www.crownoil.co.uk/lubricants/all-you-need-to-know-about-hydraulic-oil/ I would suggest an ISO 32 or 46.

Hi Brian,

I have looked at every available site regarding these saws and I am aware of Lathes.co.uk. I have noticed even with Qualter and Smith the information is thin on the ground. As these saws were in use extensively you would think the basic information would be out there?

I have the oils you mention, I topped up with the iso 68 but the arm still drops within 12 hours when not in use.

I thought the arm should stay up on its own but I dont know?

The saw cuts extremely well, I was quite shocked how quick they go through material, much improvement on my original sealy bandsaw.

I will have to order a manual.

Manny I have a Wicksteed saw too, it does have a similar problem to yours but I usually manage to work around it. I can scan the manual for you if you like.

Light hydraulic oil is high speed spindle oil. Shell used to make one called Hyspin

Hi Alain ,

I would appreciate a copy of the manual that would be great. My saw cuts really well and returns upwards. tomorrow I will calculate the displacement of the piston that pushes the ram back up. I find the upward motion a little slow compared to cutting. Its either normal due to displacement or the oil viscosity is to light and possibly bypassing the control valve.

I have just aquired a Wicksteed 6" econicut but it has a few problems, the first problem is that the hydraulic pump works as in lowers the arm and cuts very quickly and returns after cut, however the feed control to speed up the raising and lowering of the arm seems to be not working, I can turn it left or right bit does not regulate the speed at all, I notice the oil is a bit milky and the manual does say change the oil every 1000 hours but there are no instructions to do this in the manual and nor can I find any sort of drain plug whatsoever, has anyone any knowledge of what the problem could be? The coolant pump is also no good, has anyone retrofitted a coolant pump to one of these? apart from that it is a great tool.
