Oilers for my myford ml4

I've seen the offerings of RDG tools for small oilers which would fit my lathe and cost less than £2 each.

I thought about buying them and then thought I've got some brass and Ali I might as well make some, I'm wondering what size the hole needs to be at the bottom for the oil to drip into the bearing surfaces. Or would a piece of cotton wool (the type for knitting) work as a wick to allow a drip fed oil system? I have four large ones to make for the headstock and layshaft, and three smaller ones for the lead screw and saddle handle. These will be simple cup oilers not the fancy tap ones.

Thoughts please??

I have a M Type and have fitted drip type oilers and wouldn't dream of making them. As yours is a ml4 I don't know if you have room for this type but if you have that's what I would go for on the spindle lube. The other oil points are not so critical just keep regularly oiled.

I have looked on RDG site for the oilers and cannot see any at that kind of price. – Can you post a link.

Hi thanks for the responses, I would have room for some 50ml type oiler on the headstock, at the moment it's just a plain hole, and has these fitted already.

I was going to buy a few more for the other oiling points but thought I'd look at making a larger wick system ones.

Way I'd make them would be a flange for the bottom to fit the hole in the headstock, drilled and stepped at the edge for a piece of tube to fit to form the cup, a small piece of tube that is a tight fit, traveling the length of the oiler, then solder the assembly together. I've seen that a piece of incited wire works really well as a wick, the surface tension of the oil, gravitating up the steel and forming a drip at the end of the steel.
