      Hi there,

Does anyone know where I might be able to get hold of Nickel Silver Plate at 5 or 6mm thickness? I'm looking for about 1m sq. Tried all the usual suspects and searched on here. A lot of places list it on their websites but for whatever reason, when I contact them they don't have it. I've been trolling around the web for a couple of weeks but can really only find places in Asia that want to sell me it by the Ton/Shipload!

      Thanks

The first place to try would usually be Smiths, but they don't list anything that thick.

          MichaelG.

          .

          P.S.

It's not what you asked, but Milton Keynes Metals lists a price of £54 per Kilo.

          P.P.S.

This is a useful techinical reference, albeit rather dated.

Thanks Michael, tried both Smiths and MK (plus a whole lot of others!) to no avail. I KNOW it's out there – I've seen it!!

Tech reference very useful though. I'll keep trollingbut hope someone comes up trumps here.

These might be worth a try.

Just out of interest; what are you planning to make?

Thanks again Michael. Yep – worth a go and not one of the many I have tried. It's for instrument keys.

Have you tried Columbia Metals? they do a wide range of copper alloys.

John – indeed I have, thank you. Once again, nothing that thick. It's got to be out there somewhere!

Allied Copper turned up a blank too. Don't suppose there's a couple of hundred of you out there who would like to share a container load from China/India?!

If it is for Instrument keys, could you use 10mm x 6mm flat bar?

                          KWIL,

Thanks – yep those would do for the smaller ones – assuming you mean 6mm thick. If it would take some forging it would do for the larger ones too. Know where I might get some?

Try these, look for German Silver when searching although it is listed as nickel silver in the size I mentioned.

Thanks mate, I'll give some a go although trying to build up a stock of plate. Good shout about searching for German Silver – I'll give that a go too.

Maybe you have already thought of this but musical instrument makers/repairers may be able to provide a scource?

                                    RGN,

All's well that ends well … but I think you might have found a supplier more quickly if you had asked for Bar instead of Plate.

                                    Based on your original post, I was searching for a supplier of a plate 1m x 1m x 6mm.

                                      Michael,

Not so fast there trigger! The fat lady hasn't sung yet! Plate is good because of flexibility of use.

Thank you for your continued help. Can you let me know where the example is from please as it looks like, well, a small plate.

I did warn you all I was a bit slow!

Don't put the Silver bit in your searches – search on Nickel Sheet and Nickel Alloys .

Nickel Silver and German Silver were names invented by ornamental plateware makers in UK and Germany . Its main use was for the base of Silver plated table ware .

Almost pure Nickel sheet was also once used for specialist chemical process vessels but glass and stainless steel are now much more usual .

Try Scientific and Educational material suppliers .

' Nickel Silver ' type alloys are very easy to cast by the lost wax process . Some at least of musical instrument keys are made this way quite commonly . You could do this yourself but there are several professional sources for lost wax castings including a small number who supply the Model Engineering trade .

                                            Michael Williams .
