Mystery spindle taper

Another post on that lathe that might not actually be a lathe.Before replacing it I wanted to see if anyone recognised the weird looking taper.

Outside spindle is pretty average. Between 16 and 11 TPI (checking it later with a gauge) 1 3/8" spindle nose.

I dont actually know the size of the small part of the taper since my callipers can't reach down there. Looks pretty similar to the 0.82" bore on the other side of the reduction or smaller.

The outer taper had some paint on it which implies it might just be clearance rather than a mating surface, or someone just painted the lathe and didn't know what they were doing.

The nut that fits on the spindle will only screw on from the left but probably just needs the threads cleaning. The dimensions here are pretty approximate since I was eyeballing all of it with a calliper that wouldn't fit in too well.

If you don't have anything that fits the taper it is easy enough to measure and calculate. Two round bars of suitable known diameter inserted on the axis and measured for insertion depth will give youall the measurements you need to calculate the taper.

Measure taper by dropping suitable diameter balls at two places and measure distance from outside face to calculate angle.
