        Been disassembling a new lathe for just general everything refurbishment.

        The head stock bearings are both taper roller bearings marked

        "TIMKEN 1759X MADE IN ENGLAND N"

        Searching on the internet for the bearings doesn't find anything though.

        Would Timken make custom bearings where only something like 100 bearings get made?

        Bearing is 26.93*53.9*22.63 measured off my nasty calipers.

        Guessing the true value is 26.99*53.98*23.02?

          Had a search it seems 1759x may be just the cone part of the bearing rather than the whole thing. Contact a dealer with the dimensions to get a correct identification.

            Rainbows – check your measurements again and also measure the bearing in imperial units, it looks as though it could be a standard 0.875×2.125×0.9125 inch taper roller set – £27.21 each + vat from Simply Bearings.

              Currently trying to work out how to pull out the cone. Will be able to get a better idea of size and maybe the real proper bearing name once I get it out.

                In the somewhat unlikely event someone else finds this issue.

                The outer race is marked TIMKEN (R) 1730 MADE IN ENGLAND M and as stated before the inner race is TIMKEN 1759X MADE IN ENGLAND N.

                The bore is 1 1/8 while the documented size for 1730 is 1". Maybe timken made the inner race as a special for to the standard outer. Maybe someone just shoved two bearings together and hoped for the best.

                    One of the headstock bearings on the boxford 3656 lathe was originally a composite of two timken part numbered somewhat similarly to this.

                    What make lathe is this 100 off special?

                      The 100 bearing figure was just pulled out of thin air. The lathe is a L S Blackman Maidenhead there was another thread in the forum about them. Brings the number of them known to 3 (assuming one of those lathes isnt the one I own now)

                        Not that it will directly help you but this is a posting from here with referece to the oddball numbering and dimensions of the Boxford Headstock Bearings I referred to above, with the 'x' being presumably a designator for a metric bearing. Guess it's the kind of thing that only ever appeared in those huge bearing catalogues on real paper with greasy thumb prints that were probably discarded years ago.

                          If you can get access with an angle grinder grind a line down the cone then get a large cold chisel and place it on the ground line, a sharp tap should split the cone and it will slide off.

                            X is also used as an indication of "Precison Grade" bearings as used on spindles etc.

                              Glad to be corrected, I had always thought it was indicated by one, two or three etched dots.

                                Woops got my parts mixed up. Was the cup that was stuck. Similar to how you said though a carbide rotary burr got it out.
