Just finished making this Radford top slide for my Super 7 ,does what it says on the tin . Doubt anyone is very interested but just in case the whole thing is chewed out of the sold . Main parts are cast iron , feedscrew is 3/8 acme thread feedscrew bracket is alloy machined both sides . I only made it for a bit of light relief after finishing my Shand Mason fire engine which is an extremely finicky model to build , nearly drove me demented a couple of times . Photos in an album .p1000233.jpg

          Very tidy, Jeff

… I like the look of that.

          .

Edit: Mr Radford was obviously pleased with it:

          … I hope you are.

Nice work there Jeff. Are you still requiring use of the surface grinder?

            Best regards,

            Steve.

              Jeff.

A fine looking Shand Mason.. I know what you mean about about building it, mine very nearly got put under the bench on several occasions !! ( some photo's in my Album.)

I made the hoses out off plastic tube ( car screen washer type) by putting a length of mild steel bar down the centre, put it in the lathe chuck, set screw cutting to 8 tpi & wrap thin wire around the outside & then remove from lathe, cover with white heat shrink sleeving and shrink it down with hot air gun. Gives a very good effect of the ribbed hoses. Not my idea just what I found on the internet.

That's a very tidy looking bit of kit. Was it made from castings? Are the drawings available?

It certainly looks more stout than the original unit. I have found that using Gibraltar type toolpost gives all the advantages Radford mentions in the excellent link above but it would be nice to have the thicknessing ability for turning acme and square threads etc the Radford unit affords.

Steve , Thanks for the offer but I managed to get it just over a thou difference from the original with a reasonable finish . See you soon I hope .

Hopper I made my unit from the solid , but I'm a glutton for punishment , Kennions advertise castings and drawings for it .I used the original articles in the M.E. Haven't got the issue number to hand but can easily find it if it would help .

Thanks for the kind offer Jeff. I just ordered Radford's book so I can read his wide guide conversion material for an ML7 windmill I am currently tilting at. Hopefully the book, which comprises most/many of his ME articles, will include the top slide. I havent come across Kennions before, woohoo another place to spend money! I have made a few toolposts and fixed steady out of the solid, milling on my ancient Drummond and it's hard work so castings are sounding good!
