      Good evening All!

Recently purchased a second super 7 minus a few bits (leadscrew, most gears,saddle/apron) for the bargain price of £275 with the vision of replacing my old sight glass headstock with the more modern one.

The bed is actually in much better condition than my current one so i have stripped the motorising assembly off so i can give it all some much needed love and eventually a repaint, i have left the headstock in place as i see no need to remove it unless anyone would advise otherwise for any reason?

I assume that my screw cutting gearbox can just be taken from my old and bolted straight onto the bed with its leadscrew and carriers?

while i have it stripped is there anything worth replacing to save mucking around at a later date?

It also came with a Myford cut off slide and lever collet holder, I don't see the cut off slide being much use to me and after some research i am astonished at the price of the MA99E collets!….£20-30 a piece…why!?

          In answer to your question:

          1. Supply & Demand

You can make your own collets. Turn the outside diameter/s and drill, bore and ream the inside diameter all in one setting in the chuck and they will be concentric. Then slit with slitting saw. At a pinch you can even dispense with the reaming step if you can bore with a nice finish and no taper in the hole.

I was quite chuffed with the price we agreed and even happier when i viewed the lathe, quite a result.I just need to decide what to do with the remaining pieces once its all built back up, i may sell to fund the mill i keep promising myself!

So its safe to assume that these collets are not manufactured anymore? is it worth the hassle to machine a few or should i sell the chuck and purchase something a bit more up to date?

              Matty

                Hello Matty,

I will buy your cutoff slide if you want to sell!

                Regards,

                Andrew.

                  Matty,

                  A few words of caution.

                  1) The drip feed headstock is superior to the wick system and you can swop it onto the newer bed, but………..

                  2) Dependant on the actual age of your latest aquisition (bed) then your early saddle may not fit the newer bed and in particular the leadscrew will not line up. Early machines used the front shear only for alignment. Later ones utilised the outer shear edges.

                  3) Definitely keep the newer clutch, but you will need to modify the early machine belt cover if you keep the early mandrel.

PM me and I tell you what I did. Sell the collet chuck, it was quite an industrial production item.

                  Dennis
