Myford lubricated with grease

i have recently acquired a Super 7 where a previous owner has pumped grease through the nipples rather than oil as recommended. Has anyone any experience of dealing with this or able to advise as to what needs to be done ?

I do not know whether to try and flush through with paraffin firstly or simply try and flush fresh oil through. I am reluctant to consider stripping everything down. Any assistance greatly appreciated.

I have had experiance of this Allen and I pumped oil through and it flushed out the grease.

Do your very best to clear the grease, oil is the recommended lubricant, I use regular SAE 30 which is a trifle heavier than Myford recommend and I have had no untoward effects on the current ML7-R, the ML7 before it and the ML4 before that over a period of of 55 years.

Once you have put that right I am sure you will get every enjoyment out of it.

Alan, why not strip everything down? These machines are simple enough, the manual is good and a wealth of help is available here. If the previous owner was daft enough to use grease, rather than read the manual, who knows what else he's done? You need to find out, and you'll learn a lot about your machine.

I bought an Emco FB2 milling machine, also grease-lubricated by the idiot previous owner. He had put washers under the table logitudinal feed nut. What??? Obviously had no idea of how to align a feedscrew with its support bracket.

Having said all this, provided the grease hasn't hardened and blocked the oil passages, it probably hasn't done much harm. The risk is that chips and crud aren't washed out from the slideway bearing surfaces by frequent oiling – grease 'hangs around', so doesn't seem to need replenishing so often (by the misguided).

undo the nipples and clean out as much as you can the purge with the correct oil
