Myford leadscrew bracket.

Morning all,

Does anyone have experience of removing the right hand leadscrew bracket on the Myford lathe ? In addition to the two cap head screws there are two dowels tapped to aid extraction . Not sure which thread as they are damaged. With the screws removed the bracket is still firmly held in place by the dowels.

I'm thinking a simple extractor to draw the dowels and bracket off as a unit. Any advice appreciated thank you.

Looking at the parts list in the Myford handbook the dowels are standard plain ones. They are, like all good dowels, a very close fit in their holes and are therefore difficult to remove. Try gently prising the bracket off using the "two screwdrivers" technique. Go gently a little at a time and you should have no trouble.

The dowels are tapped 4 BA. You need a few inches of 4 BA studding, a BMW weight say 1" diameter and a couple of inches long drilled to clear, and a 4 BA nut. Nuy on one end of stub, thread through weight, screw other end into dowel, then slide weight smartly against nut a few times to extract dowel.

Just been to look at my lathe and I confirm that the dowels are tapped. Very thoughtful of Nottingham Myford.

I have removed the bracket a number of times by screwing in a 1" 4BA screw and giving the head a good tug with the fingers. Mine are a snug but sliding fit in both the bed and the bracket.

That's encouraging John, it may not be as difficult as I at first thought.
