Given the huge number of war finish machines still kicking about. I wonder how many of them fell into the hands of model engineers. Was it just that most of the surplus was too big or were they all snapped up by industry? Could it be possible that a high proportion were deliberately scrapped to keep demand high and thus encourage new production?

Just curious.

After the war there was a lot of new demand for the hobby because millions of people who would never have looked at a machine tool were involved in war production

Even with this demand it still took Myford for example until the early 1950s to unload all their M series stuff, although M series production ceased around 1945

Loads of WW2 stuff was still being unloaded in the 1950s because of the huge surplus. My old boy munched on WW2 ration packs when he did his 2 years of national service in the 1950s

Nothing was ever wasted back then because most people had almost nothing in the post WW2 period
