      This is a basic question about my M3 collet milling chuck, can it be used in the lathe buy just tapping it into the tapper with a mallet. As it uses the draw bar in the mill will it be ok in the lathe without using the draw bar.

          Hi Alfie

          I would suggest you make and use a draw bar, tapping the collet chuck to secure in the taper or to remove from the taper is not good for the headstock bearings. I made mine using threaded rod and a top-hat threaded heavy washer at the spindle end.

          If you have a gap at the chuck to spindle point you can make and use a wedge or a pair of wedges to remove the chuck.

            As Emgee suggests, a milling cutter causes too much vibration. You can use studding and a suitable washer and nut at the end of the spindle, it doesn't need to be super tight, just secure.

              I've got some studding so will make that, but Im not sure what Neil means by a milling cutter causes too much vibration.

                Drill chucks are held in place by the pressure of drilling pushing the taper home axially. Milling cutters produce alternating side loads with very little axial pressure and these will tend to loosen the taper.

                  Alfie, no doubt Neil means if you don't use a draw bar to secure the collet chuck the milling forces may cause the taper fit to let go. Milling puts side forces on the chuck unlike drilling operations.
