If they are ordinary steel holders you should be able to cut them with HSS tools.

Why not mount them cross wise in a 4-jaw chuck and face off the extra 4mm?

A lot will depend on the hardness of the tool holder, I have done it in the past and blunted the three tips on the first milling cutter I tried but did manage to remove the metal with another insert tool.

If your 12×12 holder was not that expensive then it may just be cheaper to buy a smaller size than risk the cost of blunting tools finding out how hard it is.

I don't have the skill as just starting I got the cutters thinking they would fit I tried to return them for smaller ones but they don't have any they will only give me a credit note to get something else but have nothing I want so stuck with them

the boring bars are both ok as they sit 2mm lower than centre so can be shimmed up

"A lot will depend on the hardness of the tool holder" says Jason, and quite rightly.

Test yours with a hacksaw or file, some are quite soft, or only surface hardened. I have taken material off using an angle grinder followed by a grindstone to finish – marked out properly to start with of course.

If you can't do it, then by the time you've posted it/them to and fro to someone who can you may as well buy a new one. And if the holder is very expensive then it is also probably very hard.

So you may be lucky as those chinese via Gurnsey holders for less that £4 each may be rather soft. blush

there's five all together I think its only the tips you put in that are hard but will test with a file

I have just had a look at the original link – he doesn't have smaller ones, also checked Banggood, they don't either! Chronos have a nice set but it isn't that price! Incidentally i have been using CCGT inserts which are sharp and have lots of rake. Meant for aluminium, they work well in the lighter sort of machines we tend to have.

A crude way to test the hardness of the holder would be to see if you can mark it with a dot punch or take a file to it.

Where in the country are you ? If they are not overly hard someone close by should be able to help. I am in the Midlands close to Lichfield.

I live in Rugeley so not to far from u I don't think the holders are made from hard metal but the inserts that go into the ends are they are same as these the two boring bars are ok as they sit 2mm under centre so can be shimmed up but the other 5 need 4mm skimming of bottom to 8mm

I had to cut a few mm off the bottom of a 20mm Sandvik tool holder for a mate. It was tough going but a carbide mill did the trick.
