        20170609_140320.jpgHi All

Just browsing in the town scrap yard and found this. looks like it is a bench mounted c/shaft for a lorch lathe. After some negotiation, how much? £10, will you take 5, nah 8, how about 7, go on then sold for 7, it was all mine. All seized up and I don't know what I'm going to do with it, I just like it! ……..and I know what you guys are thinking, was there a lathe? No such luck I'm afraid.

Nice find, Geoff … 'though it's debatable how useful these are.

These days, most watchmakers seem to either use a motor or a bow.

          .

Edit: I've just located a very nice picture of one in-situ

            Hi Michael,

I thought it was for use with an electric motor. the other side has a small 3 step pulley which I assumed would transmit the drive to a similar pulley on the lathe spindle, the larger pulleys taking the drive from the motor. Having done some research it would appear as you indicated to be some sort of hand cranking device which I have to say puzzles me? Like I said, I just like it. When time permits I'll bring it back to life!20170609_140340.jpg

Is it me or is the picture on lathes.co.uk a dud?

              lorch.jpg

It looks to me as if the belt is wrongly mounted. Surely it's rubbing against the headstock at the top and just looped around the wooden handle at the other end? More doubts, the two big wheels aren't used at all while the left-hand handle is under the table and can't be used.

Is anyone able to explain the set-up?

              Ta,

              Dave

                Dave,

Yes, the lathes.co.uk looks like a 'set-up for photography' and it's all wrong

… I will try to find a better illustration.

Can't photograph mine because it's tucked away "somewhere"

                [ I don't have the co-ordination to use it well blush ]

                  Ah, artistic license!

Really sexy little lathes though, truly objects of desire…

Thanks to Geoff's question … I rememered Steffen Pahlow

His website has been updated since I last looked; and he now offers four iBooks

                    **LINK** http://www.s1p.de/2016e/s/b/be.html

If you are interested in Lorch lathes, and have an iOS device: These are amazing value.

Note: Don't judge them by the advertised 'page count' !!

… There is much more content than that simple number would suggest.

For the vintage that Geoff has bought-into, 'Book 1' [at a trifling £1.49] should suffice; but, inevitably, I've bought all four, and am delighted.

                        Michael,

Yes I saw that when I was researching. Do people really pay that kind of money?

The more I look at this lorch attachment the more I see the potential to use it as independent overhead drive for the M type and my Potts milling spindle. The attachment clamped above the lathe, driven from an independent motor below and then the drive transferred down to the Potts. Maybe, we shall see.
