          Sort of a linear version of the tool for cutting the lines on lathe cross slide collars etc. Several versions were detailed in ME over the years, back in the day of Radford, Thomas, Chaddock et al. I like this one’s rotary stop to get the three different lengths of line automatically. Much better than the old stop bolts on a revolving plate.

            If you look at quality old scales and rules (still have Dad’s old architectural scales) you will often see “Engine divided” engraved in.  I guess the OP’s link is the engine that did the dividing.

            When you think about the work in scales, slide rules, patternmaker’s rules, nomograms, etc it obviously required a bespoke tool.
