Lathe backstop

Time has come when I need a backstop for repetitive turning to length. I had a look around and the best so far is Harold Hall's design for a Myford which was published in MEW and is also on his website,. I think I can adapt that design to my lathe, but I'm wondering if there are other designs out there which I've missed but should consider?

Thanks for the links Thor – it was indeed the thing you put in the mandrel I was thinking of. Enough info there for me to go ahead more confidently with a design for my own machine.

Finally got round to doing this – a Sunday's work (between following the goings-on at Rio) and it's already saved me (almost) as much time as it took to make. Pic below. My biggest blunder was not thinking about how to get the thing out of the mandrel again! I eventually got it out but the MKII will need provision for a puller.

Hi Robin,

The backstop is looking good. When I made mine I made provisions for knocking the backstop out of the lathe's MT mandrel. If one of the larger chucks are mounted I can remove the backstop without removing the chuck.

My recent requirement for a backstop was for 6 spacers. I put a 3/4" collet in the spindle and a piece of 3/4" tube in that. Mounted the chuck over the tube and cut the parts to length. It helps to have a lathe whose collets have a through hole and a draw tube for pulling them in.
