      Hi All,

Just bought a selection of these large collets at my local boot sale this morning, a bit on the big side for my ML7 laugh!

Can anyone please help me with an identification of type so that I can describe them correctly.

They are all Imperial sizes, all by HERBERT & Co.

Overall length is 104.5mm; the parallel section is 39.78mm; thread crest diameter is 36.5mm; keyway is 6mm wide; threaded length is approx 22mm; max diameter of bell end is approx 49.5mm. All marked with the number 7538

      Regards

      Martin

            Wow !! … Well done !!

The crossed C logo is for Crawford Collets

Details may, or may not be included in the pages in my Album.

… Sorry, haven't got time to search

              Hi MichaelG,

Find the pics to be illegible even when magnified (pixellated). Presumably the 4 digit number is what I'm looking for?

              Martin

                .

Sorry my work isn't up to your required standard !!

… It was the best I could do with the scans that Martin provided

I made individual jpeg files, so that it could be posted here.

That said: I don't actually find them illegible.

                    Michael G.

My remark about illegibility was not in any way whatsoever meant to be rude to you and I am mortified that I have offended you when you were so kindly trying to help answer my posting.

                    I offer my unconditional apology.

I was just not able to read them clearly is all and will try again by downloading them or something.

I always read your postings with great interest and am constantly amazed that you have such a breadth of knowledge and resources seemingly at your fingertips.

                    Again, my apologies.

                      Martin,

                      Thank you yes

I just felt 'put-out' by your rather dismissive first response, and then no follow-up.

MichaelG, Just looked at your album again and could read it by using the browser 'zoom in' a couple of times.

Sadly could not find the number 7538, there is a 7583, could it be a typo on the collets perhaps?

Just finished photographing these items and they seem in good order save for one which appears to have had weld placed around the inner diameter and then been machined, perhaps for an odd size?

Considering that we tend to specialise in woodworking tools it has been a bit of a 'metal week' for us, YORK lathe, these collets, yesterday a ROLLO ELF lathe and a lovely cast iron leather strap splitting machine, so lots of fun getting it all back together.

I was unable to follow up earlier as we are getting ready for another buying expedition to France tomorrow.

Best Regards and thanks for your efforts.

                        Martin

One alternative [potential] source of information, Martin:

Coventry Collets … previously part of the Alfred Herbert Group

Thank you, I will check that link out when I have time after the weekend.

Tempus very fugit at the moment!
