Insert types

I decided I wanted a decent boring bar. So I made a couple of bids on ebay for 2 separate new items. Nobody else bid so I have ended up with them both. (silly me)

One is a 12mm Iscar bar and the other is a 16mm Omega one. This one is a solid carbide one and I am surprised by it's weight for such a small piece of metal.

Obviously I need inserts for them both (they are different types) But what types.? To the uneducated it seems there are a myriad of shapes and sub-divisions depending on what you are cutting.

1) So can anybody please tell me the types I need for them both for e.g. cast iron.

2) Is there a simple way to understand the string of codes for inserts.

3) I am presuming all inserts of the same type are not created equal. Good / bad makes and a reputable supplier please.

Look here for the boring bars the letters describe the type of boring bar, the numbers show the size, click on the relevant bar and it shows you what type is uses. From there, there is still the selection of exactly which tip of the correct shape/size to use, but that is down to the material you are turning and the tip corner radius you want.

I have never had a problem with APT for my use, including full thread forming tools.
