… so I wrote a program where I could just tell it what I wanted. Like Minority Report but for 3D CAD.

You just tell it in English what you want it to do.

If you screw up you can back up to the last good instruction.

I always wanted to use 3D CAD but could never be bothered with the initial learning curve.

      Now I don’t have to.

You don’t even need to spell good!

Interesting idea – is it available for others to use?

Depending upon capability it might be good for those who struggle to learn current systems.

Chat GPT will generate STL files according to written instructions.  Says that it can’t do other CAD formats at the moment.

Does it also tell you how to machine those internal corners where the spokes meet?

All this and it reminds me of a cartoon of long ago.

It was of a student sitting on the toilet with trousers around his knees. In the top pocket of his jacket was a rolled Engineering certificate . The tag line was “Six Munce ago I cud’t even spel Engoneer, now I are one”

With AI and computers doing all the hard design work, will engineers be a thing of the past ?

Or that a computer keyboard should have a ‘do what I mean’ key.

I started to write a 3D CAD programme but couldn’t get it to fit in the memory of the spare PiocMite I had available. So I gave up and spent the time learning Solid Edge instead.

Of course that was with a RP2040 Picomite and now i have a RP2350 Picomite now (with tons more memory) although I was planning to use it to replace the ECU in my Alfa. That may all have to wait though, as Elon has just called me about a guidance system problem he’s having with his V3 Starship – but that may have to wait for the Pico 3 to be released…

                  Regards,

Funny you should mention Starships as I was wondering how much I would have to type to get it to come up with my latest engine which I have named “Orbital”.

Hopefully just asking for 2mm radius fillets to the spoke/rim joint will get the desired result as CAD failed to add that size fillets, luckily I have a cunning plan that will work on the machined part if not the 3D model.

Jason, presumably thar spherical thing opposite the cylinder is the boiler?

No, counterbalance weight – big ball bearing

                              Hi

I went to a post graduate teacher training college.  On the notice board was an advert for a “Teaching English for Engineers”  I added the almost same  graphio

“Yesterday I wasn’t an Engineer, Today I are one”   but extended it to say “Tomorrow I learn it to others.” and signed it cos I wanted them to know were arnt all fick

                              George

Same way 360 excavators get hydraulic power to their tracks perhaps?

Nope, it will be via flat faces rather than cylindrical ones. Though that could have worked with steam coming up the stationary crankshaft and out the side to meet a groove in the flywheel hub and then out along the spoke to the portface

Think of how the cylinder fits to the port face on a typical oscillating engine and then extend the port in one face so it is a complete circle. You then get continuous steam/air transfer as the flywheel rotates.
