      It's interesting to ponder that the old watchmakers, and the expert modern ones, successfully drill[ed] very small holes, using a machine powered by a bow.

        You could probably work out the rpm given the length of bow, dia it was wrapped around and how many strokes a minute, don't expect it is massively fast.

        They probably also had the knack of taking the load off the drill on the back stroke which would have helped regularly clear swarf.
