I'm new to this forum and have a quick question (sorry if it gets asked a lot)

I'm currently in the starting/planning stages of building a "Tich" as my first steam loco, and with me being of the metric age (24) i have converted the plans into metric and have also done 3D CAD drawings,

My question is: would it be against forum rules if i was to start an album to include said converted drawings along with progress pictures?

and also, in witch part of the forum would i create a progress/build thread

Welcome to the Forum Pete

On the drawing question I would tend to say no at the moment but hopefully one of the magazine editors – Diane or Neil will give their thoughts.

I don't see a problem with posting a few 3D assemblies to give people an idea of what you have done CAD wise and any progress/build photos are always welcome. Best place would be in the "work in progress" section of the forum.

I think that as your age is not divisible by 10 but is by 12 you are more Imperial than Metric

I do wonder why people convert drawings, and am often chastised for it. but I have seen numerous errors 'calculated' into the conversions with disastrous results on the build.

Ok, so I can easily work in both – even at the same time- and these days spend a good deal of my time educating 16 year olds into Imperial measurement use so that they can complete their apprenticships.

I built a 31/2" gauge large boilered Tich back in the eighties and found it to be a good start in the modelling world (actually I prefer miniature – models are Airfix kits)

thanks for the welcome,

I shall steer clear of posting the converted drawings, but i will post my cad work

all too often i am shouted at in work for using imperial measurements by the welders and fabricators, but i also get a telling off for using metic measurements by the fitters, so i am capable of using both, most of the machinery at my disposal for this project has a metric bias, witch is my reasoning behind the conversion, but to my advantage i can first convert the drawings, then build everything on my PC to make sure everything fits as it should before making errors with materials

would i be right in thinking that the large version and small versions of the Tich boiler both share the same chassis?

Another question that has been rattling around my skull is, would a stainless steel boiler be detrimental to the build or would it be just as good as a copper one?

i only ask as i have all the equipment at my disposal to make and tig weld a stainless boiler but would have to start from scratch (learn to silver solder) with making a copper one,

Club boiler inspectors won't be able to test Stainless but it would be worth talking to an independant boiler inspector to see if they would approve one, you will have to pay more to insure it as a one off rather than just a club membership fee. Stainless is quite common on continental Europe but not here.

Another option if you are able to tig weld to the required standard is to do a tig welded copper boiler.

Thanks for asking first; obviously we sell the Tich drawings over at MyHobbyStore so we need to respect that. The original drawings have been reprinted in ME a few times so it may be possible to put them up as a subscribers-only article – I'll check for you but it could take a week or more at this time of year.

Thanks for the replys guys its much appreciated, i shall check the situation regarding the boiler with my club when im next there, it may just be easier for me to do all the prep work and then get a friend of the club to do the silver soldering for me as unfortunately i cannot weld copper (have never needed to)

With regards the converted drawing i respect that they are a sale item and any free published copies would take away from that, this was my reason for asking, i will just stick to publishing my 3D CAD assemblies

If you published the 2D drawings without permission you would be likely to be in breach of copyright. If you make the 3D model files available (perhaps on Dropbox) there should be no problem. The files could be much more useful to other builders than just .jpg images which are all you could post in your album here.
