Turns out the Hemingway machinists hammer is the perfect weight and balance to crack crab claws. looks like I need to make a second one now for its rightful purpose.
With tongue firmly in cheek, i’m making no comments on people catching crabs- what members get upto in their spare time is entirely their affair! But, what an excellent use of the Hemmingway hammer! I may well make myself a second one now…
I made a Hemingway hammer about 20 years ago and have never used it. Oilcan, I will sell you mine! It has sort of taught me that you only make tools when absolutely necessary.
Usually making one is a training exercise Martin. Even South Bend Lathe published a book of machining projects. Page 18 in this PDF shows their well proportioned machinist’s hammer project. http://vintagemachinery.org/pubs/1617/15195.pdf I made one back in high school and learned a great deal.
