Help wanted . someone with a mill

Hi all . my kids have bought me a quick change toolpost for Chrimbo . I need to modify my compound to lower the centre height . its a 100 year old Drummond lathe that I inherited from dad . what I need is 5 mm milling off the top flat square and a couple off mm taking off the bottom . if theres anyone around the Hinckley Leicestershire area with a mill who would be interested in helping me . would you get in touch please

They're very very hard , i did it after annealing it and still needed a carbide cutter… I suggest a surface grinder ?

 

Bah sorry ! I miss read  thought you wanted to shorten the T P !  It's them that's rock hard…

yes I made a couple of marks in the bit I want milling with a hacksaw .and a file .fairly soft . and it has been used at some time for milling and had a chunk cut out of the front face so it should be fairly easy to machine

Grip a milling cutter in the chuck, bolt or clamp the piece to be milled on to the cross slide, using various packing pieces to adjust height and Bob's your grandmother's daughter's brother. A carriage lock is pretty much essential. Nipping up a bit of shim in the lift plate under the rear shear will do at a pinch.

Hi

You could pack the head stock & poppet head with some 1/4" or 5/16" br,ms plate, would save on thinning down an original part …………………….b

Just a thought … Can you not return and swap it out for one that gives you the correct height for your lathe . I had the same problem just with the tool holders they needed about 3mm off the bottom . I tried a carbide cutter whilst holding the part in the 4 jaw without much success . Ended up using a grinder ,a bit rough I know but needs must and it worked .

At 3 hours to Burnley I doubt you would want to but if you drive up I will happily do the machining for you.

Have you got a 4 jaw chuck and a set of flange jaws for it.?

If so you could probably do this yourself providing you were careful with the setup.

I have got a 4 jaw I also have a back plate but the swing on my lathe is not big enough as the compound is about 6 inches long

Hi Simon I recently fitted a quick change toolpost to my Drummond M type and wondered if this information is useful as I didn't have to reduce the heights but anyway have a look.

Thanks for all the offers of help . a member of this group Michael W ,has done the job for me , so ne xt thing is the choose what tools go into the 4 holders and get them centred ready for use … Happy new year to all …

Hi Simon, you are on the slippery slope now, it's near certain that you will want more tool holders, I am up to 20 now but some are spare at the moment, I am sure it won't last.
