Take a piece of suitable pipe then turn a ring that fits snugly over the gear and the OD and ID are concentric. Part off the ring to about the same thickness as the gear teeth. Then slit the ring in one place to allow it to "spring" and use as a sleeve to hold the gear in the three-jaw. If you want best accuracy, do the same but hold in the four jaw and set up the ID of the gear to run true before boring out larger or whatever you are doing.
Been boring and reaming the bronze bushings in Harley transmission gears this way for many years without a comeback.
