I am in the process of planning a re-organisation of my workshop, and have hit upon the idea of providing a free-standing cabinet on which to mount my Fobco Star and free-up some bench space.

Has anybody got any experience of doing this and can recommend either a design for a wooden cabinet, or used a commercially available item (I had considered buying a suitably sized milling machine stand from Warco or similar)?

      Any suggestions appreciated.

      Anthony

In my previous workshop I mounted my Fobco on an old wooden kitchen cabinet with a plywood top, about 19mm thick IIRC, it had a drawer and cupboard. Worked well, the Fobco is not overly heavy, but it's now stood on a bench.

I do have a milling machine stand, from Axminster, and I'm sure that would also be OK for the Fobco, but they'e not particularly cheap. Mine came with pre-fitted mounting points welded in place for a mill and these would need to be removed for the Fobco.

            Hi Anthony,

I'm using a tool-cabinet with drawers, similar to this, for my 120kg milling machine. I put a thick piece of kitchen top on top of it and some angle iron to support it. I also changed the wheels. It has done the job for over a decade, the drawers are handy for the milling machine tools and cutters.

Have a good look around youtube. There are lots of video's of making cabinets etc for lathes & milling machines. I cannot point you to one but a search should find them for you.

I would buy a secondhand bisley multidrawer cabinet with 10 or 15 drawers

when thats full of bits and bobs ( and drill bits) it wont move and the top at 10x 15 inches is perfect for a fobco

I did this for a Centec 2A with a Kinchrome trolley from when Bunnings owed Homebase with just a 1/2" chipboard table top to stiffen it. The trolley doesn't care!

However I wouldn't use anything with spindly little wheels.
