Finding correct tip for lathe tool

I swear we have this thread every week but now its my turn.

I got from a car booty today an Iscar Self Grip SGTFL1010-1.6 lathe tool. Also have the webpage on Iscar for it.

Q1) Is this insert suitable for the holder?

Q2) Where can I buy that said insert in the UK? I found an American supplier here atleast. If not is there an equivalent tip I can get in the UK?

I strongly suspect you are right. The GFN insert looks to be a sort of industry std part, although I've not seen any reference to a common std such as ISO.

Interestingly, Cutwel market a "GFN" parting system" that they say is "compatible with other manufacturers blades and tool holders". And sure enough, the recommended Iscar inserts are identified as "GFN" parts.

Interestingly (and just to confuse matters), APT Tools list GFN inserts – but they also list GTN style which look similar. Perhaps a phone call might clarify.

Note that both Iscar and Korloy (Cutwel) market an insert for aluminium parting (different chipbreaker geometry and uncoated). I have some of these but can't yet report how they differ in practice.

Guess who only just found the "Related Insert" button on the Iscarr website. That could have saved a lot of time.

Arceuro also have a similar GTN. No one has GTN of GFN with the 1.6mm width. Anyone wanna take bets on whether a 2.1mm tool would destroy the holder?
