Evening Star

A question for Neill and his astronomical friends…….what is the star in the western sky that I can see in the evenings. It is incredibly bright and I assume that it is Venus?

The only relevance of this question to model engineering is that I can see the star from my workshop and secondly Evening Star was, I believe, the last made loco of the steam era.

There are 2 planets in the Western sky in the evening at the moment. Venus and Mars. Venus will set at 21.16 and Mars at 21.41 approximately. Mars is much redder than Venus. Generally if an object is bright and on the ecliptic (path of the moon) it's a planet. If its moving it's an aircraft or a satellite. Momentary bright streaks are meteors. Jupiter rises in the East at around 22.00 and is in the SE by about 6.00 the next morning.

You absolutely do not get green stars.

Yes! Mars is up and to the left and very faintly orange (it's a long way away near the far side of its orbit).

Sadly the 'permacloud' caused by the southerly jet stream, a cold in mid-January and bad luck with a few nights earlier this month mean my last imaging session was on 2 January.

I have found the free program 'Stellarium' (at Stellarium.com) very useful for identifying stars, planets and suchlike things. After a bit of experimentation with the settings you can set it for any time, location and viewing direction.
