Hi Andrew they are split dies as im sure you know , Rainbows states Die nuts hex sided things for use with a spanner, used for cleaning up damaged bolt threads…………..b

If you try cutting full thread with a dia nut they become split die nuts………b

Rainbows, Is this thread for your lathe spindle nose? If it is, then it really should be cut in a lathe. Although it's the register that governs the accuracy, I firmly believe the thread should also be cut accurately. If you have the means to single point it "partially " them you would also have the means to "fully " cut the thread, no need for any dies to clean it up as that can be done in the lathe. I have never needed or used dies to clean up any thread that i'm cutting. Having said that, we are all different and many would use a die to "clean up " others not. [ i'm one of the not's]

Well the split nut clearly shows it could be cut. So the answer is yes, i reckon you could do it. Hasn't anyone seen the sort of dies used for pipe threading before, they're huge. (Now those are probably just for cleaning/repair) But i don't think a 1" Dia. thread with a coarse pitch is too big a push in 2 passes.

Yes ive done stuff like that back in the days of iron pipes, diameter refers to the bore, threaded with pipe dies the big uns take a bit of turning on a manually operated die, the cutting teeth were inserts bit like a coventry die head but bigger, they never cut true concentric though, not much off just a few thou,( not good enough for what goes on here) but then they didnt have to be, just a bit of boss white and hemp to seal.

I would screw cut on the lathe anything over 1/2 inch if possible…………b

I see i havent quite got the hang of this cutting and pasting mularky yet !!

Oddly enough I did know that, and that die nuts are intended to clean up threads.

In retrospect I don't know why I bothered posting; in future I'll use the time for something more useful.
