dewalt angle grinder brushes

A friend asked me to have a look at his dewalt angle grinder because it suddenly stopped working , naturally the first thing I went for was the motor brushes . checked out 1 side all seemed in order , checked out the other and noticed a small spring loaded pip in the centre of the running area . had a think and reasoned what it was for , and after a bit of internet searching I had it confirmed . they are called popoffs , when the limit of wear is reached a small piece of plastic pops though the carbon and lifts the brush off the commutator thereby preventing arcing and subsequent damage , being the owner of many "Budget" tools .I couldn't help thinking , In this case anyway ,you get what you pay for .

Think laterally! Time is short for most people so you'll be able to buy an empty packet of cornflakes, with the cornflakes already consumed by someone else to save the purchaser the time and trouble of doing so.

Possibly not fair on dewalt these days – far better than black & decker offerings.

I bought another make of large router, with problems. Fitted it with a dewalt armature (and new stickers) and it is giving me sterling service. I think dewalt are now 'middle of the road' for quality. Probably now better value for money than makita (definitely, with my experience of an expensive Li-ion screwdriver).

It is reprehensible that stopping abruptly due to excessive brush wear is not mentioned in their manuals. Better than burning the commutator though. Brush replacement does not always require 'professional' service. Not sure whether it is nanny state or greedy service costs.
