Depth Micrometer Head

Are the depth micrometer heads different to the normal micrometer heads.

Just having a go at making one but noticed on my old imperial one that the graduations are the other way round.

Cant seem to locate a specific depth micrometer head.

can a normal micrometer head be adpated to be used for a depth gauge micrometer.

They are the opposite way round the more the moving part sticks out the larger the reading

For a quick and dirty job you could flip the tube carrying the scale round. Usually slides off fairly easily. Probably have to operate on the length too. Be unpleasnt to read as numbers will be all cack handed but if needs must.

Hardly worth the effort of making as there is usually a fair choice on a certain auction site. Typically £ 5 to £ 30 depending on condition, how many rods it has and what the box (if any) is like. I never paid more than £30 for decent condition M&W / Starrett 0-6", 0-150 mm sets. Due to upgrading I'm overstocked anyway!

I struggle to find a decent metric depth micrometer at the best of times on ebay that is cheap enough….plenty of imperial ones of which I have one.

Can't for the life of me source a replacement micrometer head for a depth gauge either.

Might use the el cheapo head I have on order for some sort of carriage stop or have ago at the uni mike that stefan Gotteswinter did on youtube.

If you can arrange the base so that the scale reads 1 Inch (or 25 mm) when the anvil is flush with the surface of the base, surely you can calculate the depth by subtracting the reading when using a conventional Micrometer head?

Might seem odd at first, but practice would make perfect. (Purely theoretical suggestion, must admit that I have never tried it!)

There are some Mitutoyo 0-25mm depth gauges on Ebay at the moment.

Thanks for comments guys much appreciated.

I have milled out and adapted the base I had ready for a depth mic and adapted it to hold a cheapo digital caliper.

A bit scruffy as I tried some metal bluing on the base also. However it is quite steady and I can get it to with a few tenths of an inch to my shardlow imperial depth mic when measuring.

I will make do until I pick up a decent metric one on ebay.
