      Hi Folks,

Does the collective know where I can buy a new dead smooth hand (not needle) file. I believe the Swiss used to designate them as No 6 cut. I think I bought my last one from Shesto but they (or anybody else) don’t seem to list them.

      Cheers,

      Rod

You could try a Jewellery equipment supplier.

            These people list cut 6.

An internet search might produce many other suppliers of jewellery tools.

You will get a cut 6 here but you will pay £60 or more

              A better bet might be

Have had Vallorbe from J&L but expensive there even on offer.

What type of file you after, half round, flat, knife, pillar?

Theres no decent files nowadays, they went down the pan around 8 years ago inc Vallorbe.

Golly guys, anyone would think I hadn’t searched.

Sutton tools seem to have what I’m after. Thanks to one and all.

This post reminds me of one of my really bad workshop decisions.
About thirty years ago I bought a 6″ dead smooth file from Bert’s Surplus in Barnet.
Although “Surplus” it was top quality and is still in use although now dead dead smooth and finding brass a bit beyond it. The bad decision was buying only one and not the box! It cost less than a pound.

                        Jon,
I beg to differ about “no good files anymore” I have quite a few PFERD files and they are superb they cost a bit more than the Sandvik Bacho ones, which are also very good but I would give the PFERD’S the edge. Try one and I think you will be “converted”
                        Regards,
                        Raymond.

Sandvic dont last very long in recent times, same as the saw blades absolutely disgusting.
Even Vallorbe have gone down the pan, what used to last 6 to 8 weeks current same files now only lasting 2 days each for 4″ knife files at £12 ea in bulk.
We used to have a right game getting hold of decent 12″ 3 square bastard files, same again 2 to 3 days had it and suffering tennis elbow.

What i am trying to say bearing in mind used to use a lot of files all day long, nothing is as good as the older stuff.
