I was about to purchase a D1-3 backplate for my Denford Viceroy when I noticed that the Chinese (Chronos & RDG for instance) have apparently revised the pin size down by quite a lot! Why is this? Or am I mistaken? Would it still be safe to use?

It appears the industry standard pin dia is 0.5937″ (19/32″ or 15.05mm). But pin sizes are now quoted as 9/16″ (14.27mm) or even 14mm depending on where you look. Moreover, it appears there are imperial threaded variants and metric threaded variants out there. That’s the thing about “Standards” – there are so many variants to choose from!

Can anyone throw any light on this minefield please?
