Copper Pipe Chess Set Completion help

I write in the hope of enlisting your support in identifying anyone within your modelling clubs who may be able to help me in the making of two small chess pieces fashioned from copper piping.

The background story to this perhaps unusual request was that some 50 years ago whilst attending evening classes my wife set about making a Chess set from what was then imperial ¾” copper pipe.

Regrettably, the full set was never completed despite her best endeavours and two pieces were never made. These pieces were the Pawn and the King and the photos enclosed show how they should look.

The approximate height of the pieces is:-

The Pawn is 35mm overall in height and the King is 72mm in height.

The purpose of this exercise is to try to complete the set by no later than end of Feb 2017, which will be in time for our Golden Wedding anniversary but some additional work will be required once the two missing pieces are completed.

Once the two pieces are made some, further work will be required such as weighting the pieces in order to get the feel right and some plating work in order to identify the two sets.

I fully understand that imperial size pipe is no longer available and that the two pieces will have to be made from the current metric equivalent but that is not a problem.

I enclose pictures of the two pieces to show how they look and would be happy to provide the existing Pawn and King should that be requested

The pictures will be good.

3/4" copper pipe was a little thicker than present day but of slightly different OD. There is plenty of second hand pipework still being replaced. I expect I have a few short lengths around, if they can be found.

This iz two number, one of each piece? There being multiple 'prawns' and it is not entirely clear if you need multiples, or one singular item of each.

I've uploaded some pictures Derek sent me. It looks like his wife did some neat handiwork sorry some are rotated. I guess brass or stainless steel plugs in the base could provide the required weight. One set could be polished and laquered, the other blacked and laquered?

Epoxy mixed with filings, maybe copper would be good, or a plug of lead epoxyed in would do for weighing the pieces.

HI Derek, I have an old piece of 3/4" copper pipe which I removed from a disused water tank in my attic a couple of weeks ago, it has a usable length of at least 130mm. PM me an address and I will post it to you if you would like to have it.

Nice looking chess pieces – any chance of uploading pics of all of the different pieces?

Anyone know a simple way to create the textured effect on the body?

Small cold chisel would soon put the textured pattern onto the pipe, slip it over a bar to stop it denting and tap away.
