Blunt slitting saw

Hi,

Was I expecting too much from a new slitting saw?

I've used a slitting saw for the first time today, it's 3" x 2mm x 64T, it was cutting BMS 3/4" deep x 1/2" thick running at about 800 – 950 RPM, lubricated with oil.

The saw has become blunt before the end of the cut, would a larger diameter saw have been a better bet?

Are there different grades of slitting saws available?

They are best run a lot slower than that, would you turn 3" stock at that speed on the lathe?

Cutting speed rule of thumb for HSS when cutting mild steel is:

400 divided by the diameter in inches.

So a 4" slitting saw would run at 400/4 = 100rpm.

A 2" job would run at 400/2 = 200 rpm.

So 3" should be good at 100rpm to be safe, or maybe up to 150rpm.

Double these speeds for brass or aluminium.
