I have a Colchester Bantam 800 which I was wise enough to buy new when I was single, young and a non-householder in 1979.

I want to know the capacity of the coolant tank is, as although I have the original manual the capacity isn't mentioned. The lathe would have to be moved to enable me to measure it.

If anyone can measure theirs easily for me I'd be grateful.

Sorry for the delay, it took me 3 days to find it as it's not on the machine.

So this one off a 1600 is 16" long, 6" wide and 6 1/2" high which in my book is 624 cu in

And Google tells up that equates to 2.2493 gallons but that doesn't take into account the displacement of the coolant pump pick up and that's also full to the brim so reckon on a short 2 gallons ?

            Hi John.

Thanks very much. I have come back on tonight to report that I have just removed the splash back from my machine to measure it and also dipped the tank through the tray drain to see how deep 4 litres was.

The answers to the questions are: –

Dimensions – as near as it is possible for a dwarf to measure hanging over the machine, 6" x 6" x 14".  I cannot be sure of the 14" but it is at least that for the tray drain to work. In metric this is 150mm x 150mm x 355mm, giving a capacity of almost 8 litres, neglecting the pump parts.

These dimensions are verified by a dipped depth of 75mm in the tank from 4 litres. 75mm x 150mm x 355mm comes out as within about 6cc of 4 litres.

I'll get some more coolant at the next show I attend – it will be fine with 6 litres in there.

            Steve
