Lots of vehicle manufacturers now tighten the important fasteners into yield.

Lots of car use 'stretch bolts' for the cylinder head which is part of the reason for the elaborate tightening rituals.

I discovered what tightening a large bolt past yield does trying to get a wheel off an LDV van. What stoopid puts left hand threads on wheel nuts?

They look to me to be a tool for cutting a seat for an o ring seal on a fuel injector or the like or trimming valve guides after they have been instelled.

Just a guess !

Wifes is what buys LDV. Husbands is what welds the rust back together

They share a recirculating ball steering box with Land Rovers. Even after extreme adjustment to remove backlash and fitting a belt to the power steering any correlation between where it went and where it was supposed to go was purely accidental, yet it passed the MOT comfortably because that type of steering box is allowed to be useless!

About bolt stretch, some years ago I came across a situation where a periodic maintenance was to apply a torque wrench to hub bolts and set to 375 ft lb. These were hub bolts on an AFV, Of course nothing is soldier proof and the instructions were slavishly followed by continuous application, clicking continually on the torque wrench.

I was passing by and saw this happening and immediately stopped them doing it. I undid one of the bolts:- 7/8ths UNF and compared to a new one and it was at least 20 mm longer! It meant that all the bolts had to be changed, 32 per AFV x 18 vehs. You can imagine the kerfuffle that caused in a front line unit.
