Hi, this is my first post.

Before I forget I read a post on powder Latex gloves, some people can be allergic to latex or even to the powder used inside them Nitrile gloves are a better alternative.

I have an under used Hobby mate but would like an end mill attachment MD65 I think. Anyone in the York area please.

The issue isn't, as I understand, "don't use them if you have a latex allergy" but if you use gloves an a regular basis you may not want to sensitize yourself to latex. The reason being if you need invasive surgery you don't really want to have a surgeon plunging both latex gloved hands into your abdomen and then having you go into shock when you get a reaction. Latex is the material of choice for delicate surgery as it provides the best tactile precision. (An' you can feel stuff better too). So if you don't need latex better to use nitrile and not get sensitized.

Bit like, don't use all your really useful antibiotics on healthy farm animals you may need them on humans one day. Don't get me started on that one.

Some (OK many) years ago I was involved in the sales and marketing of surgical gloves. The powder typically used on latex gloves was simple corn starch to stop the latex sticking to itself and to make donning the gloves easier. Some intricate surgical procedures made surgeons wary of allowing corn starch into wounds and organs so starch free gloves were introduced. Some users suffered from latex allergy – itchy – so non-latex gloves have been available for donkeys years (I never heard of a patient going into shock through being allergic to latex). As far as I remember latex was always considered the best material for touch and feel but I guess other materials have caught up. Latex is still the most popular material for surgical gloves (as opposed to examination gloves where users are a lot less picky and will settle for a cheaper option). Incidentally, the fit of a glove is critical for surgeons; imagine operating for hours on end with an overly tight glove – very fatiguing and more dangerous overall than a loose glove. Hope this isn't as boring as I fear it sounds …..

According to the senior nurse friend sitting next to me they don't use any latex gloves or otherwise in her regional hospital..including surgical gloves… so worry not for your next abdominal guddle and meantime wear latex with pride..(not sure that came out quite right..)

Our Lab policy on gloves states :

"Use of latex gloves is only permitted if this is justified through a risk assessment and use of these gloves is restricted to protocols covered by a risk assessment. All gloves may cause issues, which should be immediately reported to your supervisor or the safety office who can provide assistance."

This is aimed at people who use gloves on a daily basis. Sensitization risks are higher with latex so we minimize problems by using better options. pgk pgk's friend is no doubt correct ,as hospitals would have the same policy with the aim of reducing the risk of reaction which would include surgery staff when there is not the need for latex. They are however there to be used when the task demands. So now you are informed you can choose what you do at home.
