Does anyone else have an Adept shaper vice?
I think they are a bit rare as I find no pictures on the 'net. As it was advertised in ME 1952 at 25/- I can imagine it was a bit too expensive for anyone who had just scraped enough together for the shaper. It is a proper shaper vice with the main jaw and handle at the outboard end to take the thrust. It is painted black not Adept blue.

My question revolves around the jaw hold down. The leadscrew nut is cast iron and mine has a steel overgrown T-nut rivetted on to provide the hold down bolt. The corners are knocked off to fit a circular recess in the jaw.

This has a thread of 3/8 x 28, as does one of the vice clamping T-nuts. Yes it is a standardised thread just not a common one. So i mwondering if it was originally a cast spigot with a course thread which would have been a very bad design that broke and was user replaced.

Anyway enjoy the first on the web record of their vice. ( I will send a copy to Tony later).

          That is interesting!

Never knew that Adept offered a vice to go with their Shaper.

It looks quite a beefy piece of kit, as it needs to be. The fine thread would allow a great deal of clamping force to be applied. Maybe that is what broke the original cast iron Tee nuts?

Recently, having acquired an Adept No.2, I made a vice for it.

It was all made from whatever was around, and was a poor imitation of the Precision Vice Type 2 sold by Arc

The cutting forces are resisted by a round bar engaging a semi circular recess in the underside of the main body. The bar is held in engagement by a long angled M8 capscrew.

My vice is clamped to the table by two T nuts made from the heads of long 1/2 BSW bolts.

Since it sees little use, it suffices for my purposes.

          Enjoy it!

Good point about the configuration of the shaper vice. I have noticed that some shaper users employ a conventional vice with the vice screw at right angles to the thrust which seems counter-intuitive even though it works.

For want of anything better I have been using a Record drill vice modified to incorporate a hold down.

Here is an extract from Tom Senior's 1939 catalogue:

I wonder whether small shaper vices are still made.

It is quite dinky, sized for the No 1 which it came on. Note the ruler in the picture. The Drummond shaper vice is rather more solid but has the fixed jaw at the 'wrong ' end.

That is an interesting page Ega. Apart from the hold down slots in mine it seems identical. Of course there was a lot of almost direct copying of designs back then or perhaps mine is actually a TS one.

                Bazyle:

Glad you found the catalogue extract of interest. The TS No 1 hand shaper has pride of place there and, interestingly in view of your comment, the catalogue states that it is a near copy of the Atlas No 2 machine (this seems not to be the American design covered on lathes.co.uk).

I hadn't taken in just how petite your vice is, corresponding presumably to the no 1 or 2 in the TS list
